Choosing Your Welder...
The most common welders used in auto restoration are MIG (metal arc welders, gas or flux-cored), TIG (tungsten arc welders using shielding gas) and Arc Welders (traditional stick electrode).
Depending on the car and the job in hand there are a number of questions to ask yourself so you can make the best welder decision for your project.
- What's the maximum and minimum thickness of the metal to be welded?
Cars, fortunately, use metals that fall into a relatively narrow range. - What type of metal are you working with?
Cars, generally, are made of steel but occasionally can be aluminium. - What position will the welding “head” be put in?
Will there be a lot of overhead welding? - How much current is available in your shop and do you have 220 volts?
Check your circuits.
Once you've answered these questions you can be sure to find the right welder for you and get on with restoring your classic car back to its former glory.
